Home remodeling projects are always thrilling ventures where homeowners can breathe new life into their beloved spaces. With the kids grown up and out on their own, Dennis and Judy Heckman decided it was time to transform the home where they had raised their family and turn it into a space that was more suitable to their current needs. Their recent home remodel journey was a testament to creative vision, determination, engineering, and the art of turning dreams into reality. Dennis is an engineer by trade and designed the home with Judy back in 2000. However, with their new stage of life, the couple’s residence underwent a remarkable transformation, resulting in a stunning, modern abode that perfectly reflects their style and preferences today.
The Heckmans embarked on this ambitious endeavor with the goal of updating and expanding their home to accommodate their changing needs and tastes. They chose Dean Holtmeyer with Dean Holtmeyer Construction as their contractor who proved to be a valuable partner in the entire process, ensuring that every aspect of the remodel was executed to perfection. The project involved various structural modifications and enhancements to create a more spacious and welcoming atmosphere throughout the house. Thanks to the architectural collaboration provided by Paulette Designs, the couple was ready to take their home to new heights.
The heart of any home is the kitchen, and Dennis and Judy knew that it deserved a major facelift. The kitchen underwent a total overhaul, with the relocation of a guest bath and a portion of the front porch to make way for the expanded kitchen area. The couple opted for a neutral color scheme to create a calming ambiance, allowing the natural light to bounce off the walls and countertops effortlessly. White cabinets now grace the kitchen, accompanied by sleek grey and white granite countertops that exude elegance. The addition of a grey backsplash added a modern touch, seamlessly tying together the classic and contemporary elements. The highlight of the kitchen is the large and uniquely shaped island with usable cabinets underneath, proving that functionality and aesthetics can coexist harmoniously.
In the primary suite, the Heckmans chose to focus on luxurious comfort and relaxation. Although no major structural changes were made here, they significantly upgraded the bathroom to create a spa-like oasis. The shower was quadrupled in size, providing ample room for a rejuvenating experience. They opted for a door-free shower, so that the maintenance would be simpler. The corner jetted tub was replaced with a free-standing modern tub, adding a touch of elegance to the space.
The renovation also extended to other areas of the home, including the upstairs concrete deck, just off the kitchen. The addition of a roof over this space allowed for year-round enjoyment of this bright, airy space. The floors were finished with epoxy, adding a contemporary twist to the room’s design. Neutral furniture was added for maximum enjoyment while watching tv and grilling. There is natural gas piped right out to this space, for optimal convenience.
In the basement, another full kitchen was updated, complete with upgraded countertops and appliances. The cabinets got a modern refresh and the main kitchen’s original appliances were reworked into the basement. This practical setup makes entertaining guests a breeze. The large entertainment area is unique in that there are no support posts. Thanks to Dennis’s professional background, he ensured that the space would be wide open and free of obstructions. With a pool table, ping pong, and a massive TV, it’s easy to see why this is the go-to place for get-togethers of all kinds. The couple added a home gym during the renovation that gives them a great space to exercise and focus on their health.
Dennis and Judy Heckman are environmentally conscious individuals, and their remodeling choices reflected their commitment to sustainability. The downstairs deck became a screened-in porch through a simple yet effective upgrade with the addition of screens to the existing structure, allowing the couple to enjoy the fresh air while staying protected from pests and rain. To furnish this space, the Heckmans made a thoughtful choice by purchasing modular furniture made from recycled milk jugs, proving that style and eco-friendliness can mix beautifully.
As with any remodeling project, the Heckmans faced their fair share of challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chain disruptions caused delays, pushing the start of construction by nine months. However, the couple’s unwavering determination and positive attitude helped them navigate through these hurdles. Furthermore, having already purchased most of the fixtures before the pandemic’s impact, Dennis and Judy found themselves well-prepared for the construction phase.
Today, Dennis and Judy Heckman proudly reside in their forever home, a testament to their creativity, resilience, and passion for design. The remarkable remodel has brought new life to their dwelling, creating an inviting and sophisticated space that perfectly suits their lifestyle.
With a captivating kitchen, a serene primary suite, and expanded living spaces, this home remodel is proof of the power of envisioning possibilities and working diligently to achieve them. The Heckmans’ journey serves as an inspiration to homeowners everywhere, showing that with the right vision and the right team, the sky is the limit when it comes to rejuvenating a house into a forever home.
